Portuguese Libraries

Hi! So, if you have read my older posts, one thing you will notice is my hatred towards my hometown's library. The only YA book you can find there is either something from Harry Potter or a classic and nothing else (literally nothing else!).

I have also said before that I found a library in the city where I study that has some YA books like Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why, for example which makes me really happy! (But, I am at school from 8a.m to 8p.m so when I leave school it is already closed...)

I realise that a lot of people might think that I'm exagerating when I say how bad our libraries are so I decided to make an experiment! I went on some people's Stacking The Shelves posts and I checked to see if some of the books that bloggers got from the library were available in Braga (where I study). Here it is:

This Wicked Game - Michelle Zink: not available
Fiery Heart - Richelle Mead : not available (but they do have other books by her...just not this one)
S. -  J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst: not available

Time Between Us (Time Between Us #1) - Tamara Ireland Stone: not available
Just Like Fate - Cat Patrick & Suzanne Young: not available
Unravel Me (Shatter Me #1) - Tahereh Mafi: not available
Tarnish - Katherine Longshore: not available
The Originals - Cat Patrick: not available
All Our Yesterdays (All Our Yesterdays #1) - Cristin Terrill: not available
Time After Time (Time Between Us #2) - Tamara Ireland Stone: not available
Let It Snow - John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle: not available (they do have The Fault In Our Stars and another book by Lauren Myracle)
The Name Of The Star (Shades Of London #1) - Maureen Johnson: not available
Wild Cards (Wild Cards #1) - Simone Elkeles: not available

The Taker - Alma Katsu: not available
Taking Eve - Iris Johansen: not available (there are three other books from her though)

Navigating Early - Clare Vanderpool: not available
The Son of Neptune - Rick Riordan: not available (but there are other Percy Jackson books)

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children: The Graphic Novel - Ransom Riggs: not available
Love Overdue - Pamela Morsi: not available
Wife by Wednesday (Weekday Brides Bk 1) - Catherine Bybee: not available

Eleanor & Park - Rainbow Rowell: not available
Crossed - Ally Condie: not available (they do have Matched though)
Frostbite - Richelle Mead: available!
I Am Half-Sick of Shadows - Alan Bradley: not available (but they do have the previous books)

Find Me - Romily Bernard: not available
Parallel - Lauren Miller: not available
The Boyfriend App - Katie Sise: not available
Possess - Gretchen McNeil: not available
Velveteen - Daniel Marks: not available

So, what do you guys think? Am I exagerating? Do you have good libraries where you live?
Let me know in the comments! :)

  1. I'm with you, you are not alone!! I live in Venezuela so you can imagine the poor libraries we have (poor for my tastes of course). Lately they are selling more YA books but only the famous ones with a movie (for example: the hunger games), and usually we have to wait years until the books are translated. That's why I'm very thankful for learning English, because I can read so many books! Only one library sells books in English and of course you won't find anything you want, but at least they try.

That's one of the main reasons why I love my Kindle and ebooks. I feel like a queen because I can read any book I want! I know, ebooks aren't the same ...they don't smell like books, etc, but they changed my life :)

    1. Oh, how I understand you!! I really hate having to wait years for a book to get translated (if it ever does!)...if it hasn't been translated they don't sell the english version either! I just prefer reading in english nowadays and it's not even because of the price..I just feel like something always gets lost in translation! I use ebooks mainly for review copies or for those books that I just can't wait for! Thanks for stopping by! :)

  2. Wow that stinks about your library =( My library doesn't have the greatest YA section, but I can usually find a decent amount of books from my TBR pile.

    1. Yeah, the struggles of an international blogger! Haha :)
Well, The Book Depository really is a life saver! And you're lucky! :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Thanks for visiting, and of course it's OK to use the books I got from my library. I'm sorry you don't have better access to these books. Is there a system to recommend books for them to purchase? We have a great inter-library loan program in Illinois too, so I can really get ANYTHING from a library. We are very lucky.

    1. Thanks for stopping by! Where I study I guess they could try to get more books (one day I'll take the day to go there haha). In my town I just don't think that the people who work there really care about it...I'm still going to email the city hall and suggest they do something about the library...let's see what they say! :)

  4. I'm the first blogger featured in your list, and I do realize how fortunate I am to have access to such a wonderful library. I would say that 80-90% of books on my TBR at any given time could be found at the library. I live in a medium-sized city in the US, and I suspect that my library is pretty typical for a city of this size here.

I wish everyone in the world could have access to a similar library. I could not afford to purchase all of the books I borrow every year, and I sympathize with those for whom purchasing is the only option.

    1. Thanks for stopping by! I wish I could have access to a library like that! That's why things like The Book Depository and AwesomeBooks (this one I just recently discovered) are the best! If on top of buying the books I also had to pay for shiiping I'd be doomed! Haha
